Harpenden Town 1–3 WGC

A POWERFUL last half-hour showing brought WGC their second pre-season victory in three games, in their annual warm-up fixture at SSML neighbours Harpenden.

New boss Gavin Kelsey’s re-built side trailed to a first-half Harps’ header, that went in off a post despite keeper Connor Sansom’s desperate attempts for a long period, but late in the game, the Citizens overpowered the home side.

With around 20 minutes remaining, a trialist got over a cross from the left that reached Reece Mosanya, who had spent most of the game at left-back. He took it down on the right and despatched it into the net for 1-1.

Minutes later, WGC had the lead. Eddie Corbit, on for the second-half, was taken down just inside the area for a clear penalty, that he put away expertly to put the visitors ahead.

And close to full-time it was Corbit who gave the game it’s most memorable moment with an outstanding second goal and WGC’s third, meeting another cross from the left, full on the volley to send an unstoppable effort into the top rigging.

Kelsey’s side was without most of his frontline forwards. Kendall Gyamfi, scorer of two in their opening win at St Neots, was resting a foot injury, Nick Ralfe, a muscle injury while George Sippetts was unavailable.

WGC: (starting line-up): Sansom, Ngete, Lovell, Gauthier, Mosanya, Stacey, Cantello, Gordon, Robertson, Rookard, a trialist. Second-half subsistutes: Corbit, Nosike, Shenouda, Monks, Mendes & two trialists.
